Meet the team

Christchurch South

EYR Chairperson

Colter Carson, 24

Student, University of Canterbury (previously Christchurch Rudolf Steiner School)

Favourite place in Canterbury: Te Poho-o-Tamatea (Port Hills). The hills have essentially been my back garden since 2013 when I first moved to Ōtautahi and I regularly walk, cycle and climb there.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I am very passionate about all major environmental issues (i.e. climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution) and also have a strong interest in how these correlate to social issues (i.e. climate justice, equity issues with development).
I feel very motivated to use my energy, skills and knowledge to advocate that we do better for the environment as a society.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Microscopic vision (to see down to the atomic level).

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Transparency, fairness and compassion.

North Canterbury/Ōpukepuke

EYR Deputy Chairperson

Ruby Gill-Clifford, 18

University of Canterbury (previously Rangiora High)

Favourite place in Canterbury: The Rocks Amberley

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I would like to work with other like-minded and passionate young people to create meaningful change in our region.
I think the relationship the Rōpū has with the Council is a rare and crucial one, and one that is integral to the resilient and sustainable future of Canterbury.
I would like to be a part of this journey and am passionate about ensuring that the opportunity for young people to have their say is available to all and that education around relevant climate issues is widespread.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Shapeshifter- I feel it is the perfect example of a loophole. If I was a shapeshifter, I could change into whichever type of animal, vegetable or mineral (of which possessed the superpower I wanted to have) I liked! Wanting to fly? Bird. Wanting to climb? Monkey. Wanting to aggressively peck at climate change deniers` boots? No problem- poof, chicken.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Compassion, respect, equality.

EYR Secretary

Tessa Allan, 20

University of Canterbury (previously Hurunui College)

Favourite place in Canterbury: Hawarden (my hometown, a place for calmness and love).

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I am excited to work with a new group to create opportunities that connect young people with the environment.
Being a part of the Youth Rōpū is a great chance to further explore my passions and- develop my skills and knowledge.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I’d be Shapeshifter, because I could adapt to any environment I am in and enhance specific features when doing activities.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Family-orientated, diligence, optimism.

EYR Treasurer

Alice Docking, 20

Lincoln University (previously Cashmere High)

Favourite place in Canterbury: My favourite place in Canterbury is Hinewai Reserve, out on the Banks Peninsula. Hinewai Reserve is privately owned land with several walking tracks for public access. Hinewai Reserve is a restoration project aiming to foster the natural regeneration of vegetation and wildlife.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I’m interested in the relationship between social and environmental issues within the Canterbury community.
I’m particularly interested in working alongside the community to ensure legislative changes are appropriately interpreted.
I believe to make an impact, understanding how the system works is influential to what you do. This can be achieved through the Youth Rōpū.
I believe there is significant value to the untrained, youth perspective. I believe the dynamic environment of Ōtautahi has developed adaptability, creativity and flexibility of thinking.
I recognise that these changes are happening soon and would love to get involved with the youth's voice for policy implementation and enable community interpretation in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I would love to have the superpower of time travel. Perhaps influenced by an upbringing of watching Doctor Who, time travel would allow me to have an in-depth understanding of past actions undertaken in Aotearoa, New Zealand. I would love the ability to visit Aotearoa in her peak ecological prime.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Manaakitanga, collaboration, Tuakana-teina

South Canterbury

Oli Kirke, 15

Roncalli College

Favourite place in Canterbury: Mt Nimrod Scenic Reserve Walkway. I love hiking in general, but this local walk is like a home to me. I walk into the forest and I have hope.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I often feel like my “voice” is a whisper. Being part of a larger group like this would mean that my “voice” could become louder and more could be done.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

To eliminate greed in favour of kindness and better treatment of the environment.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Honesty, rationality (seeing clearly what is important and what isn’t) and determination.

Hadlee Begg, 16

Timaru Boys High

Favourite place in Canterbury: Timaru because most of my family and friends are there or in the surrounding area.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I want to take a step forward in helping the environment throughout Canterbury and being a Timaru Boys High environmental group leader, I can bring other youth ideas forward.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Telekinesis (being able to move things with my mind) because it would come in handy if I need to get things done quickly or more efficiently.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Bubbly, kind, positive.

Jolie Sarginson, 17

Papanui High

Favourite place in Canterbury: New Brighton Beach. It is somewhere I go with my friends, eat ice cream and hot chips, watch the sun set, go surfing, swimming and even the bus rides there are an adventure. It also has fireworks and my favorite thrift stores, what’s not to love?

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I have a strong passion for New Zealand's natural and cultural environment. Being involved in the Youth Rōpū will give me the opportunity to explore what specific career path I want to take in the future.
It will also give me the opportunity to meet and interact with a group of like-minded individuals who will come together and share our ideas on how we can get involved in leadership and kaitiakitanga as young members of society.
My passion for the natural environment is largely from my cultural background. As a Māori, I feel a strong connection to the earth and its natural resources.
It is important that they are cared for and protected for ourselves and our future generations to come.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I would definitely want to be able to teleport anywhere, any time. I’d travel all around the world when I was bored. If I was hungry and really craving some authentic Asian cuisine I’d go get it, if I was having a bad day and needed something to cheer me up I could practically get anything I wanted. However, there are definitely some other less selfish things I could do with the power. Considering I’d basically be a superhero I’d be the best superhero known to man. Cat stuck in a tree? I’m there!

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Attitude, initiative, respect

Christchurch Central

Phoebe McIntosh, 19

University of Canterbury ( previously St Mary’s College, Auckland)

Favourite place in Canterbury: Lake Tekapo. It was one of my grandma’s favorite places and so whenever I go there, I am reminded of her. Since I was very little, I have been on many family holidays for Easter and Christmas. We spend our time climbing up Mount John, swimming in the lake, exploring the area with my younger cousins or going to the spa. What makes this place even more special is the breathtaking environment. The lake surrounded by mountains is beautiful, in both winter and summer and is an example of just one of the many lovely environments unique to Canterbury.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I am a passionate environmentalist who wants to make a difference.
The recent release of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report has been a catalyst for me - both in stressing the urgency for action and making me recognise that policy change and young people must both be at the forefront of climate activism.
My motivation to participate in environmentalism comes from my responsibility to make as much of a contribution as I can to help tackle what is the greatest challenge of our generation.
The position provides the perfect opportunity to learn more about Environment Canterbury and the role that it plays in our community, to empower and work with other like-minded people and ultimately is one way that I can directly help the environment.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I would choose to be able to heal people. The idea that someone could heal someone’s pain so easily is very appealing to me and is the reason I would choose this as my superpower!

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Integrity, empathy, commitment.

Greg Kiddney, 20

University of Canterbury (previously Burnside High)

Favourite place in Canterbury: Two places: Mount Somers and Victoria Park. I’m a keen tramper and when I’m not too busy, I love tramping with my mates. Victoria Park reminds me of the first place I went after I landed in Waitaha Canterbury for the first time 7 years ago. I can see the whole of Christchurch and always wonder about the ever-changing landscape of the Canterbury Plain and urban Christchurch. I love going up there later in the evening because you can see the city lights before dark. With Mount Somers, I just love the view of rural Canterbury from there on a good day, as well as exploring the Pinnacles from the hut with my mates!

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

At University I've learnt how district and regional council can have an impact on climate change in Canterbury.

I'm always interested in teaching communities, but this is my chance to educate youth about the impact on our social and natural environment.
I’m incredibly passionate about active transport as well as getting around Central Christchurch.
I was truly inspired by a church colleague of mine, Georgina Fee, who used to be part of the Youth Rōpū.
I was inspired by the projects she undertook. One day, she told me that they were looking for new representatives and I was thrilled to hear of such opportunities!

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Tough question! I think I’m more intrigued in the idea of a protego spell from Harry Potter or a mental shield. A shield would be a very cool superpower to have, so that I can continue with my journey despite the obstacles along the way to reach my destination.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Empathy, diversity and honesty.

Amanda Kennedy, 15

Favourite place in Canterbury: Akaroa is gorgeous as it offers peace in an often crazy world. It has some amazing walks and being surrounded by nature makes me incredibly happy. The wildlife is great too.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

Environment Canterbury is a vital part of the Canterbury region, especially with climate change and environmental issues being some of the biggest facing our country today.
There is still time for change to help reverse these issues and I feel that looking to youth is key.
As a young person, I believe that doing my part to help is incredibly important as this will affect not only me and those I care about, but future generations too.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

To speak and understand any language in the world. I believe that being able to communicate with others is invaluable, and having the ability to speak to anyone in the world would be amazing.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Justice, Manaakitanga, resilience.

Shelby Allan, 15

Papanui High

Favourite place in Canterbury: Akaroa. It’s a beautiful town and I’ve made some of my favourite memories on school camps and day trips there. The fish and chips are also amazing.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

I’ve always been interested in advocating for the environment and when I saw this opportunity I knew I had to apply. It seems like an amazing learning opportunity and I’d love to have the chance to magnify youth voices in the community.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

To be fluent in every language.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Respect, passion, resilience

Shannon McLean, 20

University of Canterbury

Favourite place in Canterbury: My hall, Rochester and Rutherford, because it has become my home. I feel safe and surrounded by people that care for me. Being in my first year living away from home, it has been really important to find a place where I can relax but also feel connected. It is where I have learnt how to manage my own routines and where I write my assignments for university. I am the community representative here and I have the opportunity to continuously improve things within the hall and create new initiatives to boost wellbeing of other students.

Why do you want to be a part of the Youth Rōpū?

Being able to have your voice and opinions heard is a basic human right, youth however are often marginalised as their voices are left unheard or not taken seriously.
This is why I strive to help change this stigma with making my own and others ideas and opinions heard. I want to empower others to realise that their ideas are valid and they can create change.
Being on my local town’s youth council and leading my college’s one gave me the ability to influence change, however after moving to Christchurch for university I’ve felt less connected.
Environment Canterbury seems like a great medium for me to utilise my leadership and environmental passions. I want to help make Ōtautahi a more sustainable and equitable place to live in.

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

My superpower would be used to eliminate all fake news. Then we can focus on the real issues and not waste our time arguing about what’s real or not.

If you only had 3 words to describe your values what would they be?

Sustainable, connection and empathy.
