Safety Tech Challenge Fund - Martina Tschapka (T3K.ai) video transcript

Hi, my name is Martina and I work for T3K.ai. T3K is a company specialised in media screening, so screening of photo and video data. And we screen these contents for illegal and harmful contents, and a very big focus of this work is the detection of child sexual abuse material.

So the objective of our project was to use AI classifiers to detect Child Sexual Abuse Material directly on a user's phone. So typically, we would use AI classifiers on a server to use all the power of the server. So one of the challenges and objectives in this project was to make sure that the battery life, but also the storage of a device, wasn't overwhelmed with that scanning.

It was great to get to know and get into this network of UK Safety Tech, which is very advanced, and therefore that was a great opportunity.

I think the Safety Tech Challenge Fund really gave not only companies the opportunity to explore this very important topic, but it also helped raise awareness again, in the public, in the industry about this issue. Because yeah, we all know it, we’ve all experienced the discussions about end-to-end encryption and the tricky balance between security and privacy.

But I think that the Challenge Fund really made it clear that there is no black and white – there isn't only you can have one or the other, you can have safety or privacy – but that it's possible to create solutions that combine both of these aspects, and then make it possible to create more safety while still containing privacy.
