As the induction period ends we have completed our first exhibition and now we develop fresh ideas and build on what we have learnt so far. Do we want to change, has a new process inspired a change in you. Are you thinking you need to work harder or want to work hard to achieve your goals. Has a career path appeared that you had no idea existed? It's all very exciting and for some overwhelming. We see this every year and will support you through but the most important think is you need to take stock of the induction period and reflect on how it could have gone better or what you will do next after being enthused. This weeks blog, has a look at different technologies and new ways to create art, from the YBAs who pioneered a modern approach to John Wilson doing lo fi documentary collages and the significance of AI technology in Art. Explore and continue to be interested in everything.
AI Technology and ART
There is a lot of discussion about AI art and it's merits. Is it Art? There is definitely some creative input from an artist, but they don't do the work in making. That is true for artists over the centuries who have always had teams of creatives making work, or painting certain aspects for an artists, because they can't do it all themselves; they have work to sell and no time to make it.
The AI generators are now all over the internet and certain artists will embrace it as a new tool, like lens in the 1600s and computers in the 1960 and 70s.
It's up to you to make up your mind. Corridor Crew showcase a great new technology where you can add your own images to the AI to personalize the images. It makes for some really great work and will obviously be a game changer in the AI industry.
However, the key point in their evaluation is their concern about plagiarism, is it ok to use someone else's style to inspire new work. It has to create something new, rather than being a copy of someone else. A hurdle you have to jump in your work. Have a watch and see what you think. I assume this will be something we revisit too.
The cover image and this sections image are all AI generated.
EXHIBITION: CREATIVE INDUSTRIES INDUCTION SHOWCASE
Thanks to all the students and staff you took part in the exhibition, held on the ground floor on Wednesday, the work looked great and many people commented on the quality students were able to produce so early on in the course. You have done yourself proud, not only in producing the work, but those students who helped curate the show and helped put up the work.
I hope your families and friends enjoyed seeing the work, your college and meeting your new friends and teacher and feel it's all going well so far.
We all had a great time and we look forward to many more successful occasions just like it.
TV: Sensationalists: The Bad Girls and Boys of British Art
For all you 90s enthusiasts and fashionistas. In 1997 an art exhibition featured Young British Artists became one of the most controversial shows ever staged at The Royal Academy. The fact it was shown there gives you a sense of the importance of the artists and the influence of the owner of all this work, Charles Saatchi. This is a programme about the story and legacy of the YBAs, who included Damian Hirst, Tracey Emin and Gavin Turk. (All people we have featured in WOW previously.) and their influence of society since that time. These guys became ingrained into popular culture and Art, Music and Sport all became the focus of Cool Britannia. Whatever you think of that legacy, is up to you but at the time it was the news story. A fascinating look into all those involved and how they worked together to both shock and amaze the world.
TV: HOW TO WITH JOHN WILSON
Do you want to know how to make perfect Rissoto? Set up Scaffolding? Split the bill? Do you want to be more spontaneous? Well maybe this show is for you. Follow John Wilson as he tries to find how to, whatever the theme is that week, around New York. It's described as a comedy documentary, but there are some great insights into peoples lives and ultimately you have a sense of how to.... by the end.
It's a video collage of his musings on the subjects and it is great to see how he matches his incidental shots with what he is saying. It has amazing reviews and everyone I know that has watched it loved it.
When we're thinking about new discoveries and being interested in things this is a fun place to continue your journey.
I like a side by side, remake video, See Paul Rudd's that I have previously shared. In his lastest song Lewis Capaldi has nearly shot for shot remade the video for club tropicana by Wham! The juxtaposition between the two leading men, is where the humour lies, but it is really fun. Capaldi questioning societal norms on beauty.
Is it copying or inspiration? Is it ok to use an icon to promote your work? What benefit might it have? all things in Art you should think about.
TV: Ghosts Season 4
Ghosts is back on the BBC for series 4. A very funny programme about a woman who can see all the ghosts in her house, after a near death experience. Of course no one else can see them, so there is much fun to be had with that concept. In this series the B&B has opened and the ghosts have all their usual worries.
You could definitely just start watching from series 4 but all series are available should you wish to watch them all. There is also an american version too, if you want to find that?
