Dear parents/carers
As part of your child’s education at Avondale, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that gives children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential.
I am writing to let you know that during the Summer term your child’s class will be taking part in lessons which will focus on the relationships and sex education (if your child is in KS2) aspect of this programme. The units are called ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’. Lessons will include pupils learning about healthy relationships, including friendships; families; growing and changing, including puberty; personal hygiene; changing feelings; becoming more independent; keeping safe; developing self-esteem and confidence. Pupils will have opportunities to ask questions.
All children will be taught relationship education as part of national curriculum and consent was sought at the start of the year for children to be taught age appropriate sex education. Sex education lessons will only be taught to children with consent, though we thank you for your support as is the vast majority of our pupils.
PSHE education is taught throughout the school in every year group and is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and governing body. All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values. Please visit the school’s website for more detail about our PSHE curriculum.
As a school community, we are committed to working in partnership with parents; previous parental feedback has indicated that parents continue to be highly supportive of the relationships and sex education programme. If you would like to find out more or discuss anything further, please email the office (FAO Miss Bolton) or attend our open classroom in 1B on Wednesday 19 April from 3:30 pm.
Thank you for your continued support.
Miss Bolton, (PSHE Lead)
