Netflix has officially approved the Sony FX3 for Netflix commissioned projects!
The FX3-approved codec is its 4K XAVC S-I All-Intra option in 24/30/60/120p
The 16-Bit uncompressed RAW codec which is available when recorded with the Atomos Ninja V is also Netflix approved.
With the Sony FX3 becoming Netflix approved this means that many filmmakers will now be able to use this nimble little camera on Netflix-commissioned projects.
Netflix's seal of approval is a red tape that only needs to be crossed if Netflix is producing the content.
If a documentary or film is shot on a smartphone or a non-approved camera, this can still be sold to Netflix should they like the content enough to purchase.
The Sony FX3 is a lightweight & versatile camera for the modern filmmaker. The Sony FX3 has already been making strides in the filmmaking space with many directors opting to use this on set. Legendary Youtube filmmaker Danny Gevirts is currently in production of his first feature "I Think I'm Sick" & is using the Sony FX3 as a B cam to the Sony Venice 2.
In addition to filmmakers like Danny Gevirtz, Cinematographer Greig Fraser will be shooting Gareth Edwards next film ‘True Love’ exclusively on the Sony FX3
Greig Fraser was the Director of Photography for notable titles like Dune, Dune Part two, The Batman, The Mandalorian, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Zero Dark Thirty, Snow White & The Huntsmen & many more.
"I'm about to shoot the entire film on this camera (Sony FX3), It's so ridiculous that it's so small & such high ISO for such a small camera" - Greig Fraser DoP of Dune, the Mandalorian, The Batman & many more. - The Cinematography Podcast E:154
The Sony FX3 comes with an integrated XLR Audio top handle. This top handle is essentially the Sony XLR-K3M & top handle in one. It attaches to the FX3 via the multi-interface shoe. This allows creators to use high-quality XLR shotgun microphones in a small lightweight run & gun set-up.
