Year 12 Visual Arts students traveled to Ravensbourne University by the O2 in North Greenwich to experience a creative day workshop based on research around maps and map designing.
The day started with an introduction to how artists approach map making and the students were introduced to the map work of artist Grayson Perry and his use of maps to map identity and connection to spaces.
The students were tasked to consider their own maps based on their own interests and personal identity. They set about sketching out rough ideas in a sketchbook and then they developed these towards final pieces. Some worked flat using drawing materials to produce their work while others experimented with collage and texture; some even pushed their work in more three-dimensional directions.
There was an excellent all inclusive crit of the work at the end of the session in which everyone talked about their outcomes and others were invited to comment. It was great to see how everyone took ownership of their own work, shared their thoughts and listened intently to their peers… an amazing group of young creatives… well done everyone!!
A massive thank you to all at Ravensbourne for accommodating our students and offering such a wonderful and challenging opportunity to share and experience through creative making and discussion… a fantastic day!!
