The Resilience Project @ SMS

In Term 2 Sanderson Middle School students were introduced to THE RESILIENCE PROJECT to support their mental health and wellbeing.
The message from the TRP team is strong, supportive and targeted. Here is what they say about TRP. What The Resilience Project delivers: These statistics drive our commitment to teach positive strategies to help people build happiness and resilience. We are especially committed to delivering programs in early learning centres as well as primary and secondary schools – settings the recent Victorian Royal Commission and Productivity Commission revealed as having the biggest unmet need. Our work in Education: We are grateful and proud to have delivered wellbeing programs to over 1500 schools and early learning centres across Australia. Our school's program has been designed by teachers for teachers and has been evaluated by the University of Melbourne. Through presentations, student curriculum, teacher resources and digital content, The Resilience Project’s Education Programs support mental health in the classroom, staffroom and family home. The research is clear; the more positive emotion you experience, the more resilient you will be. For that reason we focus on three key pillars that have been proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM), with Emotional Literacy being a foundational skill to practise these strategies. Learn more about TRP here https://theresilienceproject.com.au/education-2/

Visual Arts & Dance Classes SLIDE into "LIFE".

The Year 8 Dance class and Year 9 Visual Art class went to the Darwin Entertainment Centre on Thursday 18 May to see SLIDE Youth Dance Theatre’s latest show ‘Life’. It was absolutely magnificent. Here are a few reviews from students who saw it: “Mind blowing! The Darwin Entertainment Centre is amazing. It was very entertaining with flashing lights, loud music and full of energy. My personal experience was emotional, seeing people go through bullying was upsetting. The show was about the difference of being alone or lonely” – Heidi Bennett. “The songs were really good, and they put energy in every step. The lights were colourful, they did everything really successfully” – Fatimah Dil Mohamad. “It was a story about bullying, it used movements, sign language and verbal communication to tell the story. I loved the part in the library when everyone was dancing” – Olivia Shaw.

Poetry Writing - Year 8 English

Miss Becker’s Year 8 English class have been developing their poetic writing and analytical skills. Their task was to write poems in response to the song I Was Only Nineteen by Redgum and to a poem called My Story is Your Story by Alice Eather. Here are a few stand out untitled poems.

IWS class TOUR of the HIVE at CDU

During Semester 1, students in the Year 9 Integrated Work Studies (IWS) class focused on goal setting, personal skills development and exploring the five growth areas in the NT - Mining, Health, Agriculture, Hospitality and Construction. Students also had the opportunity to study core subjects such as Health, Work Studies, Humanities and Science. The class, accompanied by Mr Jongue and Mr Coggan, visited the HIVE (Health Immersive Virtual Education) in the College of Health and Human Sciences at CDU to support their investigation of Scientific Advances in Industry. Thank you to Mr Coggan for organising this engaging and enriching learning experience!

Science - Heart Dissection

Meanwhile, back in the Laboratory, 83 Science class engaged in HEART DISSECTION. Year 83 Science students embraced their learning experience as they dissected and investigated the pig heart, comparing it to other mammalian hearts. Pig hearts are similar to other mammals, and we learn a lot from dissecting them. There are so many details to compare. Students enjoyed dissecting the hearts, learning new terms associated with dissection and drawing their findings on a heart diagram. Thank you Ms Fraser.

DUKES & OUTDOOR ED - living their best lives learning outdoors in the NT

DUKES CAMP 1 @ Litchfield National Park. In the Duke of Edinburgh Award classes, students engaged in practical learning experiences within and beyond the school boundaries. Students explored leadership characteristics and styles and engaged in leadership opportunities through volunteering and assisting students in local Primary Schools. Students gained an understanding of basic first aid responses and demonstrated these skills in a variety of realistic outdoor scenarios, applying movement skills and concepts while bushwalking, swimming and stand-up paddle boarding. They continued to refine specialised movement skills through a range of challenging outdoor situations. Students additionally completed risk analyses of outdoor excursions and completed practical assessments whilst in an outdoor environment.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education Camp at Kakadu: In this semester of Outdoor Education, students engaged in practical learning experiences in natural environments within and beyond the school boundaries. Students analysed environmental sustainability and investigated the factors that influence risks in outdoor settings then applying first aid practices. Certainly, a highlight of the course was their engagement in leadership and teamwork-based activities while on excursions and the four-day camp where they applied their skills and movement concepts for orienteering, bushwalking, and swimming. Students also demonstrated their ability to move safely and competently in challenging situations while making connections to the level of risk involved.

NAIDOC 17 AUGUST

NDA against Bullying and Violence 18 August

We're growing connections to help prevent bullying We are pleased to announce the theme for the 2023 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA) is Growing connections. On Friday 18 August 2023, help us to create positive action by growing connections with students, school staff and our school communities for Australia’s key school bullying prevention initiative. The 2023 NDA theme promotes the importance of student connectedness and sense of belonging, helping students to feel accepted, respected, included and supported. Research has shown that strong school community connections and social skills are protective factors in the prevention of bullying and enable positive help-seeking behaviours in students.
