SimNews Brief Newsletter of the ECU BSOM Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program

Summer 2022

Thank you to everyone who helped make academic year 2021-2022 a success! We will complete the year with over 6,000 learner encounters (14,000 contact hours).

Welcome new students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff! If you are interested in learning more about the Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program (ICSP), please visit our website, email csc@ecu.edu, or stop by BSOM 1L-09 to meet us.

If you are a current AHA Basic Life Support Instructor and are interested in teaching classes for the medical students, please contact us!

Announcements

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Kim Haga, MBA, our new Simulation Program Coordinator. Kim joins us from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she worked as a Simulated Client Facilitator for five years. Kim can be reached in the Simulation Center at hagaki22@ecu.edu and 744-3251.

Jessica Cringan, Paramedic, CHSOS, has moved to the role of Simulation Specialist. We are thrilled that she can share her expertise in this new role. She is a great asset to our team!

The Simulation Administrative Suite (1L-28) has moved to 1L-09, adjacent to Brody Commons. Signage will be posted directing visitors to the new space. Thank you to everyone who has supported the growth of our program over the years, which has made this expansion possible.

Program Activity

BSOM, College of Nursing Faculty at Transitions to Residency Course

Internal Medicine Residency Chiefs held a skills day for residents that included guided practice on lumbar punctures, paracentesis, central lines, intubations, and peripheral IV insertions.

BSOM M2 student Michael Denning is spending six weeks in the Simulation Center to learn about simulation as a teaching modality. This is part of the summer immersion teaching experience for medical education track students.

Michael Denning, BSOM M2, Student explains the importance of "Stop the Bleed" techniques to Brody RISE participants.

Monthly Emergency Medicine Residency Simulation and Skills conferences continue in the BSOM Clinical Simulation Center, with residents practice a variety of procedural skills and participate in scenarios led by EM Faculty. In June, residents focused on cricothyrotomy, chest tubes, cardiac pacing, lumbar puncture, central lines, and pericardiocentesis.

ECU Health Medical Center PICU and NICU held an interdisciplinary skills day to ensure their staff is up to date on clinical skills and promote interprofessional collaboration between APPs, residents, fellows, attendings, and CTT.

Second-year medical students participated in their first clinical applications scenario where they learn how to assess a patient in crisis, recognize the etiology of an acute medical condition, intervene appropriately, discuss pathology, and communicate as a team. Students will participate in six different cases throughout the upcoming academic year with pharmacology and clinical simulation faculty where they apply classroom knowledge to simulation scenarios.

EastCare continues their staff competency assessment program in the Simulation Center. They provide a great example of ensuring maintenance of skills through quarterly education sessions and individual assessments.

BSOM Clinical Simulation and School of Dental Medicine faculty provided incoming dental residents with a simulation-based program designed to train healthcare providers in emergency response during the critical first five minutes of a medical crisis.

The Department of Physicians Assistant Studies held a women’s health skills day for students, which included practicing delivery maneuvers using SimMom, pelvic exams on task trainers, and reviewing APGAR scores with SimBaby.

The Central Venous Catheterization course continues monthly for residents, fellows, and APPs who perform this procedure in the hospital. It is part of the formal credentialing process required by ECU Health Medical Center.

Scholarly Activity

The 2nd edition of the textbook Defining Excellence in Simulation Programs (Maxworthy et al) was published in June. BSOM ICSP authored the Mobile Simulation chapter. This is an official publication endorsed by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The ICSP has requested a digital copy of the book be available through Laupus Library for all students and faculty. A hard copy will also be available in the Simulation Center.

Regional and Military Activity

The 2nd Marine Airwing attended quarterly trainings at the BSOM Clinical Simulation Center for procedural skills training, MV-22 Osprey transport simulations, and using the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit.

The collaborative course, Safe and Effective Moderate Conscious Sedation and Sedation Emergency Management, was held at the Davidson Community Learning Service Center in June 2022. Eastern AHEC, ECU Dental School, and BSOM ICSP partner to train regional dental providers in sedation-related emergencies. The next course is scheduled in Lillington, NC, this fall.
