A big week for Year 1! Week 6

I think this has been my favourite week in Year 1 so far! We welcomed Brenda in our History topic, took part in our first ever class assembly, won the attendance award and hosted a Hooks into Books event!

This week in History, we wanted to learn what life was like in the past, but it was hard to imagine because we are so young. Luckily someone very special came to help us! Brenda, who is 80 years old, visited our school and showed us her childhood toys. They were all made of wood or knitted! Brenda didn’t have an iPad or video games growing up, instead, she played with wooden dolls and spinning tops instead! It was so interesting to see how different life was when she was our age.

On Tuesday, Brenda came back in to ask for our help. When she was five years old in primary school, she buried a time capsule full of toys with her friends and wants to find it. However, because she is older and more forgetful now, she doesn’t know where she has put it! She asked if we could use our knowledge about toys from the past to help her locate it. We became St. John’s Detectives and made our badges to start work right away!

On Tuesday Year 1 hosted their first ever class assembly. It was amazing and everybody spoke with such confidence. Well done everyone!

In Maths, the children have been learning all about the number line. We created a game where we had to use the number line as stepping stones, counting the jumps to reach our friends!

Some of the children have been taking part in autumn themed English lessons, where they made autumn trees and labelled a hedgehog. 🍂🦔

On Thursday, not only did the children have a non-school uniform day for winning their attendance award, they also hosted a Hooks into Books session! Our grown-ups were invited to come along and read a story that we got to take home! We loved the book and enjoyed the activities linked to it.

This has definitely been the busiest but most rewarding week yet...

Well done everyone!
