On the 11th of July 2023, the Sustainable Futures Team held an afternoon tea and debate session on the topics of degrowth and technology in the fashion industry. The event included two special guest speakers, Dr Katia Dayan Vladimirova from the University of Geneva and Dr Courtney Chrimes from the University of Manchester who presided over a lively debate session.
Centred around Resourceful Futures, one of the Challenge Areas of Sustainable Futures, the event attracted delegates from several UK Universities as well as the Manchester Fashion Institute.
After an afternoon tea and networking session, the debate session went ahead with the aim of discussing how degrowth and technology may enable a more sustainable approach in the fashion industry.
Dr Katia Dayan Vladimirova informed the session of her research interests in sustainable fashion consumption, with a specific focus on de-growth and sufficiency and also how she is actively shaping policy by posing challenging questions.
By delving further into this topic, Dr Courtney Chrimes's similar research interests in the intersection of fashion and digital technology added much to an already engaging debate. The debate was eventually drawn to a close, after which another networking session took place where delegates had the chance to discuss the issues and challenges brought up earlier. After this, the event was soon brought to a close.
