How the Auburn University Honors College Began

  • The Honors College was started by a parent questioning why there was no Honors Program at Auburn.
  • Associate Dean, Dr. Caine Campbell, was tasked by Dean Edward Hobbs to create the program.
  • The Auburn University Honors College was the first Honors College established in Alabama.
  • The Honors College was officially established in 1998.

The History of Katherine Cooper Cater Hall

  • Katherine Cooper Cater Hall, also known as Cater Hall, is home to the Auburn Honors College.
  • It was built in 1915 as the President's Mansion for President Charles Thach.
  • Cater Hall is also on the National Registry of Historical Places.

GROWTH OF THE HONORS COLLEGE

  • In 1979, the Honors College had 15 students, two staff members and no honors specific courses.
  • By 2019, the Honors College had grown to 1,850 students, 10 staff members, and 123 honors specific courses.
  • The largest freshman class for the honors college was 1,013 students in 2010.
  • In 2023, the Honors College now offers around 190 honors specific courses and four different honors distinctions.
