Dan Kessel | Drawing

Dan has been interested in art since high school when he discovered a passion for pen and ink drawing. After high school, he completed a few projects, but it wasn’t until retirement that he once again picked up his pens. He renewed his passion for drawing during an art class at the Adams County Arts Council. He enjoys drawing barns, old buildings and rusted vehicles. For many years, he has entered his artwork into the BarnArt Show and Sale sponsored by the Historic Gettysburg-Adams County Preservation Society.

James Roach | Photography

James has had a life long interest in photography. In high school, he was the photographer for the weekly newspaper. Since then, he enjoys composing and photographing many subjects.

Joyce Brown | Painting

Joyce took a painting class when she was 70 years old and has loved it ever since. She loves being creative and experimenting with different painting mediums.

Joe feels like painting comes naturally to him. He loves the feeling of starting a project and being creative.

Deborah Harrison | Cross Stitch/Sculpture

Deborah’s mother was a sewer, and she hoped for the time to sew, too. She took quilting and needlework classes when her children were young. When her children were older, she took a few art classes at a community college. One class was three dimensional art.

Myrtle McCleary | Cross Stitch/Knitting/Sewing

Myrtle began sewing at the beginning of her teaching career. Over the years, she made her teaching clothes. She has made curtains, draperies and reupholstered many things. She also made the gowns for Red Lion’s Centennial Court.

Yvonne "Sue" Myers | Gourd Crafts

Sue Myers was introduced to the Pennsylvania Gourd Society in 2009 and has been a member ever since. Over the years, she has held many titles in the organization and won numerous awards, including a Golden Gourd trophy!

Fran Snyder | Quilting

Fran began quilting at 47 years old. The first quilt she made was for her granddaughter. Over the years, she has made more than 50 large quilts and 50 small baby quilts, lap robes and framed quilts.

Lois taught herself how to crochet and loved it from the start. She enjoys crocheting afghans and gifting them to friends and family.

Richard Atkinson | Writing

Richard has developed an interest in creative writing. He writes solely for the pleasure of it and shares his works with some friends. He has written a couple short stories, one short novel and submitted a few stories for the Cottage Connection newsletter.

Nancy began coloring pictures during the pandemic and continues to enjoy it.

Ruth wrote poetry in high school and was asked to write poetry for her 50th high school reunion. Since living at The Village at Shrewsbury, she has written short stories and poems for the Cottage Connection newsletter.

Elaine has always enjoyed the arts, especially music and art. She uses watercolors, oils, charcoals, pencils and crayons.

Ed began painting recently. He became interested in watercolors after taking a class. He won an award for his paintings at an event hosted at the Senior Olympics for York County.

James has always enjoyed nature and its beauty. Photography enables James to save the image, view it later and share it with others.

Moni says that she enjoys needlework, mostly petit point work.

Linda Murphy | Window Screen Painting

Linda became interested in painting 23 years ago. She was raised in East Baltimore City, Maryland, and enjoyed the painted window screens in houses. In 2000, she took a window screen painting class at a high school. In total, she has painted 20 window screens. She also enjoys painting with watercolors and acrylics.

Joyce has painted since she was 7 years old. She started taking painting classes in high school. Currently, she leads a painting class at The Village at Shrewsbury.

Linda Smith | Knitting/Quilting

Linda started knitting in her 30s and began again after moving to The Village at Shrewsbury. She took quilting classes in her 50s and joined the York Quilters Guild.

Robert Smith | Mountain Dulcimers

Robert is a juried crafter by Early American Life Magazine. He has exhibited and sold his work at many craft fairs and shows.

Emmy Lee Steigelman | Quilting

Emmy Lee became a quilter after retiring as a special education teacher. She prefers smaller projects like pillows and has made christening gowns. She received blue ribbons for her works in the Maryland State Fair.

Cherie Brothers | Stained Glass

Cherie has always loved the stained glass in church windows. During one of her winter visits to Florida, a friend helped her make her first piece of stained glass – an angel. She then took lessons at a local shop and the rest was history.

Michael Brothers Sr. | Painting

Michael has enjoyed the arts since he was a child. In 2004, he began painting with watercolors. He had a goal of being accepted into a national exhibit, and in 2014, his painting “Despair” was accepted into the Keystone National Watercolor on Paper Exhibition. He has won many awards in York, Hanover and Melbourne, Florida.

Bill and Barbara enjoy woodturning and woodworking. They enjoy working with wood because of the varying colors, grains and patterns.

Cathy Heilman | Embroidery

Cathy completed a crewed embroidery scene with a house, flowers and water 25 years ago. She enjoys all crafts and artwork.

David Hunter | Woodworking

Upon retirement, David (pictured with wife, Carol) started woodworking as a hobby and made toys and furniture. He was introduced to lathe work, which became his passion.

Pat says that creativity runs in her family, with everyone having their own area of expertise. She says she inherited a little of everyone’s creativity. Art has been a woodworker all his life, following in his dad and brother’s footsteps.

The Village at Utz Terrace

Sharon Benner | Painting

Sharon’s painting style has been called loose and painterly. Her subject matter ranges from landscapes of the Gettysburg Battlefield and the parks in the Susquehanna Valley to figurative, still life paintings. It is her love of plein air painting that has her return to the Gettysburg Battlefield. The morning mist, fog, snow or haze of summer are all of interest to her and are painted with quick strokes of the brush or with heavy impasto paint applied with a pallet knife. Sharon says her plein air paintings reflect her love of color and light on the landscape.

Brenda Benson | Photography/Short Stories

Brenda has always enjoyed photography and started incorporating her photos into books for her grandchildren. She has made more than 100 books! She won the Guthrie Memorial Library’s Short Story Contest in 2021.

Robert Rife | Wooden Cork Items

Robert wanted a unique way to display a picture of his car, so he made barn pictures. He has made and sold many of them. He also makes trivets, key chains and letters out of wine corks.

Shirley Rife | Wreathes/Centerpieces

Shirley was a floral designer for years before moving to The Village at Utz Terrace. She likes taking things that may end up in landfills and finding ways to use them.

Richard Shrader | Woodworking

Richard began woodworking and started painting his woodwork. Richard was on WGAL Channel 8 news for an interview regarding an auction that showcased his life’s work of wood carvings and painting. He has received various awards and was in Hanover and York newspapers six times for his wood carvings.
