Corey Times October 17th, 2022

LATEST NEWS

These last few weeks have been full of exciting learning opportunities as we discovered more about Hispanic culture. Our Fifth Graders had a blast learning (and voting) during the Music Mania event. Every grade level has been learning about a different country in Latin America, and with the help of our fabulous volunteers, we will soon be able to showcase what we learned. Please make sure to attend our Dia de los Muertos celebration on November 3rd, where you will be able to see the displays from the world (in addition to our door decorations, activities, and performances by Sam Houston Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico).

We also participated in the National Walk to School Day, enjoyed a preview of the Mindfullness Room, and selected prizes from the Book Vending Machine donated by our generous PTA. We are excited about all the events that are right around the corner!

For those who want to see documents (like the Corey Times) in Spanish, watch the video below. This video is in Spanish. All you need to do is hover over the title area, right-click and select "Translate to Spanish". The first time, if Spanish is not visible, click on the "three dots" and select the Spanish language. This will allow you to toggle between English and Spanish.

Fifth Grade Music Mania

Please see information below from our Fifth Grade team:

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, in fifth grade we have been celebrating with our own version of Music Mania. For the past few weeks, the students have voted each day for their favorite of two songs. We started with 16 songs, and then worked our way down to the finals, where the students voted for one final winner (similar to March Madness). Through this activity, they have learned about the different cultures, music, and artists all across Latin America. We initiated Music Mania with sixteen songs and the final winner was “El Baile del Sapito” by Belinda from Mexico.

“My favorite part of Music Mania was learning more Spanish and hearing new songs from different cultures I've never heard” is what one student said.

It was such a thrilling experience to watch them vote each day and get to learn more about Hispanic culture, the Spanish language, and new songs.

Please take a minute to watch a short video about Music Mania.

mindfulness room

Please see message below from our Counselor, Mrs. Young:

Winners from our Mindfulness Room “Sneak-a-Peak” drawing spent time with Mrs. Young checking out many of the relaxing activities available. Students enjoyed painting, drawing, playdough, kinetic sand, practicing piano, yoga, and the mini trampolines just to name a few! A great big THANK YOU to all of our parents and volunteers who donated supplies/furniture and their time to helping make this happen for Corey!

national walk to school day

A big thank you to Coach Crocker for coordinating our National Walk to School Day. We enjoyed walking, biking, or riding or scooters to school. We appreciate everyone who came out, and Arlington PD for coming out to escort us.

attendance

We would like to continue to partner with you in making sure that students are at school on time and ready to learn every day (unless they are ill). Students benefit both socially and academically as they attend school daily. Our teachers plan highly engaging lessons that benefit students as they make academic gains, acquire language skills (in both English and Spanish) and interact with peers and adults appropriately.

In addition to the benefits to our students, attendance plays a key role in how our district (and school) is funded. Absences (excused or unexcused) are factored into our attendance rate as a campus. Our attendance goal as a campus is to reach at least 96.8% of students present. We were unable to reach our Attendance Goal for the First Six Weeks. Our Attendance Rate was at 95.9%. Please continue to bring your child/children to school daily (unless they are ill) so that we help them create positive habits that will be of value for the rest of their lives.

Please see message below from our Corey Cubs PTA:

Calling all Corey Cubs!🎉🎉 It is time to showcase your talent for the PTA Reflections contest!

This is a wonderful creative outlet with a very timely theme. Students may create a dance choreography, film production, visual arts, music composition, photography or literature entry. Please look at the guidelines in the link below to ensure entries are within size/material limits set. Each student is able to participate in more than one category if they desire.

It is not mandatory but a great chance for our students to get creative, self-reflective and get recognized for their work.

All entries due November 1, 2022. I will be at the main entrance collecting reflections entry on 10/21, 10/28 and 11/1

Thank you for helping make our 2022 Reflections Program a success. We look forward to seeing all the hard work from our amazing students!
