Last week, we celebrated Red Ribbon week in AISD with the theme of "Take My Hand and Make a Stand to be Drug-Free". Our wonderful counselor, Mrs. Young, came up with different ideas during the week to help our students remember the importance to be drug-free. We were thrilled to see our students (and staff) participate all week long.

Fifth Grade "Harry Potter Day"

Our Fifth Graders were able to enjoy their Harry Potter Day as they were sorted into the different houses and engaged in various activities (with the help of our fabulous volunteers). The activities included a "Potions" class (Science experiment), "Quill Writing", "Wand Making" and "Care of Magical Creatures" (writing activity).

Dia de los Muertos and Journey around Latin America

Our students have been studying various countries these past few weeks (Venezuela, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Puerto Rico). Our parent volunteers have done an outstanding job decorating and making these countries come to life in our hallways. We invite everyone to come out on Thursday, November 3rd to see our beautiful hallways during our Dia de los Muertos Celebration. Our classes have also been studying about various historical figures as we decorated our classroom doors for Dia de los Muertos. We appreciate all the help we received from our volunteers to make this happen.

Please make sure to attend our Dia de los Muertos celebration on November 3rd, where you will be able to see the displays from the world (in addition to our door decorations, activities, and performances by Sam Houston Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico). The costume contest is themed for Dia de los Muertos, such as La Catrina/Catrin or Hispanic Heritage.

Book vending machine

Our Corey PTA donated a Book Vending Machine to our campus at the end of last school year. We are so thankful to have this unique opportunity to celebrate our students, while nourishing the love for reading. Please see information below from our phenomenal librarian, Mr. Cannon:

"As a reward to students for academic excellence, perfect attendance, model citizenship, or excelling in some other area, one student from each classroom will receive a gold coin that will be spent in our book vending machine. These coins are given out at the three-week and six-week marks each grading period and students who earn them get to keep these books forever!"

This is just one example of how much our Corey PTA contributes to our learning environment. We are so thankful!

We would like to continue to partner with you in making sure that students are at school on time and ready to learn every day (unless they are ill). Students benefit both socially and academically as they attend school daily. Our teachers plan highly engaging lessons that benefit students as they make academic gains, acquire language skills (in both English and Spanish) and interact with peers and adults appropriately.

In addition to the benefits to our students, attendance plays a key role in how our district (and school) is funded. Absences (excused or unexcused) are factored into our attendance rate as a campus.

Our attendance goal as a campus is to reach at least 96.8% of students present. We were unable to reach our Attendance Goal for the Second Six Weeks. Our Attendance Rate was at 95.18%.

Please continue to bring your child/children to school daily (unless they are ill) so that we help them create positive habits that will be of value for the rest of their lives.
