Corey Times February 28th, 2023

LATEST NEWS

As we finish the month of February, we focus on all that we learned, from the contributions of famous African Americans, to the importance of kindness and what it means to be a good friend. Our Kindness Week was quite a success, and we participated in many different activities. Our parent volunteers helped plan fun Valentine's Day parties, and we thoroughly enjoyed the return of our PTA sponsored school dance. Our third graders impressed us with their dance moves during the Dance Recital as well as sharing information about various countries with us. Select artists in Kinder-Third grade had their artwork showcased at Arlington ISD's Art Show at the PDC. Our Second Graders went on two different fieldtrips (Bass Hall and Dallas Black Dance Theatre). Our Fifth Graders went on a fieldtrip to AT&T stadium, while our Fourth Graders visited Austin!

This week our students in Third through Fifth Grade will be taking a Benchmark Assessment. As you know, students in Texas have specific TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) that are crucial at each grade level. The assessments that students take throughout the year provide important information to teachers on how well students are progressing towards mastery of their grade level TEKS, and which areas they may need additional support (whole group or in small groups). We always encourage our students to show their level of understanding, so that we know how to better support them as learners. The STAAR Assessment provides a snapshot of their level of proficiency (Did Not Meet, Approaches, Meets and Masters), but the learning that takes place and growth shown is our focus. We are proud of our hard work, and this can be seen in our performance level in the State Accountability system. Please take a moment to look over our School Report Card for 2022.

Kindness Week

This year, our focus for Kindness Week was on being a good friend. We learned about kindness throughout the week as we had an uplifting experience with the "Magic Mirror", participated in the "Kind Art Project" and enjoyed a classroom visit from therapy dogs. This week would have not been possible without Mrs. Whittenberg and her team of parent volunteers. We truly feel the support and love of our learning community. The entire campus (and staff) received a kindness shirt from our PTA with the message: "Be the Kind of Friend You Want". Mr. Rosales worked with all our students in writing the lyrics for our school's kindness song through Kind Music: "You Are Not Alone". Please take a moment to view our morning announcements from our own Cub Hub (which includes our song).

third Grade dance recital

Our Third Grade students have been hard at work all school year to learn about various countries. Each one of our four homeroom classrooms performed a dance from a particular country (Nepal, China, Mexico, and Puerto Rico). Students were also engaged in an Arts Integration project in which they studied about their particular country, then created an art project to share their knowledge. This amazing work was displayed on our Dance Recital night. In addition, our very own Corey Dance Crew performed in the opening act. All four class came together for the grand finale: "Waka Waka" (This Time for Africa). What a spectacular night!

Aisd Kinder-3rd art show

We have so many talented students at Corey Academy! We were so proud to celebrate the work of some of these Kinder-Third Grade artists during AISD's Art Show at the PDC. Mrs. Ray and Ms. Carbuccia inspire and support our Corey Cubs as they continue to grow and shine in through their artwork.

dream makers Banquet

Arlington ISD's Education Foundation recognized the various schools throughout the district who applied and received grants for innovative projects during their Dream Makers Banquet. We are so proud of Mr. Rosales and Mrs. Phelps (with assistance from Coach Crocker) for being awarded $8,250 for the purchase and installation of a cyclorama curtain. Our staff continuously shows a dedication and commitment to taking our program "to the next level". We are incredibly grateful to the Arlington ISD Education Foundation for their continued support of AISD and form making our "Dream Makers" feel so special!

attendance

We would like to continue to partner with you in making sure that students are at school on time and ready to learn every day (unless they are ill). Students benefit both socially and academically as they attend school daily. Our teachers plan highly engaging lessons that benefit students as they make academic gains, acquire language skills (in both English and Spanish) and interact with peers and adults appropriately.

In addition to the benefits to our students, attendance plays a key role in how our district (and school) is funded. Absences (excused or unexcused) are factored into our attendance rate as a campus.

Our attendance goal as a campus is to reach at least 96.8% of students present. We were unable to reach our Attendance Goal for the fourth Six Weeks. Our Attendance Rate was at 95.8%.

Please continue to bring your child/children to school daily (unless they are ill) so that we help them create positive habits that will be of value for the rest of their lives.

As part of our Attendance Incentive plan, each class colors in the word ATTENDANCE one letter at a time. They can color a letter when the class has "Perfect Attendance" for the day. Each class is working towards their own rewards when they have colored in the whole word. Several classes have won the trophy since the last Corey Times. A big congratulations to the following Perfect Attendance Classes: Mrs. Flores, Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Campos, Ms. Saucedo, and Ms. Cruz!

Students had so much fun as their classes celebrated Perfect Attendance. Our classes had a blast with Silly String Parties, Pajama Days, Game Days, Dance Parties, No Shoes For a Day, etc.

Attendance Parties

Every month, we will also celebrate the class with the highest attendance rate for each grade level. Let's see who wins for the month of February!

brightbytes survey

Please see important information below about AISD's Technology Survey:

Arlington ISD is now conducting its annual technology and learning questionnaire in order to learn more about the technology use of our students both at school and at home. We encourage all parents, students (grades 3-12) and teachers to participate.

The data received will help the district make the best possible technology decisions for the future.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in the survey, which is available in English and in Spanish. Your response will:

Remain anonymous to protect your privacy

Provide valuable input to the district about families’ access to and use of technology.

Parents and guardians with students at multiple Arlington ISD campuses should only complete one survey for whichever campus they prefer.

The survey will take between five to ten minutes to complete. Questionnaires must be completed by Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Please access the survey at this link: https://bit.ly/brightbytes2023

Pta School dance

PTA's School Dance is back! Our students (and families) had such a blast during the school dance. We enjoyed concessions, glow necklaces, and music from DJ Astronaut. We appreciate the talent of Mrs. Meza-Kohnenkampf (MYMK Photography) for capturing the most amazing photos in the photo booth. Please see link below.

Camp Innovation

Please take a moment to read information below about Camp Innovation this summer. This opportunity is available for students who are currently enrolled in 4th or 5th grade.

"Camp Innovation is a week-long camp that allows students to be creative using technology in a variety of ways. Each camp will include robotics, programming and a lot of other fun activities. Camp Innovation serves students in grades 4th-9th."

"At Camp Innovation we want to expose students to a variety of innovative technologies and learning experiences, designed to:

Build foundational knowledge and skills for computer science readiness

Develop the thinking and problem-solving processes required for coding

Provide hands-on opportunities to develop coding skills

Participate in enrichment opportunities with technology that emphasizes communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity."

Corey Academy is scheduled for Week 1: June 5 - 8. Camp registration opens March 3rd.

Honorary Texas Life Membership Award

Please see message below from our Corey PTA about the Honorary Texas Life Membership Award recipients:

👏This past week Corey had the honor of celebrating two of our outstanding PTA members at the Founders' Day Banquet. Mrs. Kimberly Leman and Mrs. Brooklyn Richardson were our two recipients of the Honorary Texas Life Membership Award. This award is one of the highest honors that may be presented to individuals that have contributed significantly to the PTA and for their outstanding services to children and youth in Arlington.

Kimberly and Brooklyn have gone above and beyond and are valuable volunteers to Corey. They are dedicated to our students and staff and have put in countless hours into helping Corey be a great place.
