Corey Times April 24th, 2023

LATEST NewS

The end of the year tends to be exceptionally busy, but it also provides us with opportunities to experience first hand what being a Corey Cub is all about. We are committed to excellence in academics, performance and language development! Our students are in the process of showing their growth in Spanish during our AVANT Spanish assessment window which is going on right now. We also enjoyed the beautiful weather and the activities in both our Field Day and our school-wide performance at the Levitt Pavilion. We welcomed our newest Corey Cubs as the 2023-2024 Kinder cohort came in for registration. Our Corey community came together to show our support for the Lamar staff as Corey parents, guardians and staff made contributions to show our love and support and stock their lounge.

Thank you for your generous donations as we showed our support to Lamar Staff.

staar assessments

We are so proud of the growth shown by all our Corey Cubs this school year. Our staff has been diligently tailoring their instruction to meet the unique needs of all our students. As the year comes to an end, we are able to demonstrate all that we have learned as our Third-Fifth Graders take their STAAR Assessments (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness). STAAR Assessments are valuable for us in assessing progress and provide information that will be helpful for your child's future learning. The STAAR tests yield important data that teachers will use to see how students are progressing with the curriculum. Data gathered will be used to identify your child's strengths and growth opportunities moving forward. The test results will help teachers to identify and fill any learning gaps your child may have. We know that our students will shine during their assessments, but we want to do our part to make sure that they have a calm and peaceful testing environment.

Key reminders for our students' success:

  • Please make sure your child has a good night's rest prior to their assessments.
  • Please make sure your child is at school AND on time- Students should be at school by 8:20. Testing will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. A calm morning helps students begin their day on a positive note.
  • Please encourage your child, and remind them to try their best.
  • Please make sure your child eats breakfast (at home or at school).
  • Please do not make appointments or pick up your child early on STAAR Assessment days.

Our PTA volunteers have created an inspiring mural for our students that remind them that they are so much more than a score. There are many wonderful traits and abilities that a test cannot measure.

Our STAAR Assessments are on the following days:
  • April 26th STAAR Reading (3rd, 4th, 5th Grade) No visitors or volunteers on campus.
  • May 2nd STAAR Science (5th Grade only) No visitors or volunteers on campus.
  • May 4th STAAR Math (3rd, 4th, 5th Grade) No visitors or volunteers on campus.

We ask that there are no volunteers or visitors (including lunch) during STAAR Assessment dates.

levitt pavilion

We experienced a truly magical night at the Levitt Pavilion. We were also able to showcase our students in Kinder through Fifth Grade as each grade level sang or danced. We also enjoyed piano performances, and performacnces from Strings, choir, Percussion Ensemble, Musical and Dance Crews. It was a lovely evening, in which we celebrated Corey's talented students. We are so thankful for the dedication of our entire staff who collaborated in making the evening run smoothly. We are particularly impressed with our Multiple Intelligence team and the hours they dedicated to planning this event. We are so impressed!

Please take a moment to view the video of the 2022-2023 Levitt Pavilion celebration below.

field day

We were blessed with wonderful weather as we enjoyed our Corey Field Day. Students seemed to enjoy participating in the various activities and spending time with family and friends. The concessions were also such a big hit! We would like to thank Coach Crocker, Coach Buckley, and the Multiple Intelligence team for planning and running the activities. We would also like to thank our numerous volunteers for helping run the concession stand and for helping out.

Please take a moment to enjoy the video below with some fun pictures of Field Day!

KInder cohort 2023-2024 Registration

We had an opportunity to welcome our 2023-2024 Kinder Cohort during our two day Registration event. Students enjoyed meeting their Kinder teachers and TA's as they took a brief assessment while our parents and guardians were able to look over needed paperwork for Registration. We are so thankful to our PTA for proving a "signing" opportunity, a photo booth and a warm welcome to our newest Cub families (and of course an opportunity to purchase Corey gear). Our mascot, Osito, even made a surprise visit and our Kinder friends received a cute Corey button! Our families also enjoyed tours of the building hosted by volunteer Corey staff. Corey staff volunteered to work the various stations, as well as our amazing Safety Patrol who escorted our youngest Cubs around the building. This is a perfect example of why Corey Academy is such an amazing place! We love and appreciate our learning community.

attendance

We would like to continue to partner with you in making sure that students are at school on time and ready to learn every day (unless they are ill). Students benefit both socially and academically as they attend school daily. Our teachers plan highly engaging lessons that benefit students as they make academic gains, acquire language skills (in both English and Spanish) and interact with peers and adults appropriately.

In addition to the benefits to our students, attendance plays a key role in how our district (and school) is funded. Absences (excused or unexcused) are factored into our attendance rate as a campus.

Our attendance goal as a campus is to reach at least 96.8% of students present. We were unable to reach our Attendance Goal for the fifth Six Weeks. Our Attendance Rate was at 96.0%.

Please continue to bring your child/children to school daily (unless they are ill) so that we help them create positive habits that will be of value for the rest of their lives.

Next time you come up to the school, please take a minute to view our newest attendance information (thanks to our wonderful volunteers). We are so proud to announce our winner of the Fifth Six Weeks Attendance: Second Grade (97%), followed by First Grade (96.4%) and Fifth Grade (95.8%). Thank you for making attendance a priority!
